come out 和 go out 都可指从里面到外面的动作。差别在于说话者所在的位置不同。come out 是人在外面，要人从里面出来，而 go out 是人在里面，命令别人出去。
come out 作“上市”的时候，通常是指书籍的出版、电影或是流行品的上市。
come out 还有一个很特殊的用法。同性恋者公开向人表明自己的性取向称为“出柜”，英文是 come out，由 come out of the closet 简化而成；没有“出柜”的同志则是 in the closet。电影《新郎向后跑》的英文短名是 in and out，内容叙述的是一个自以为是异性恋的男主角终于发现并接受自己是同性恋者，然后坦然“出柜”的经过，所以短名中的 in 就是指 in the closet，out 即指 out of the closet。
