give up 在第一个和第二个例句中指的是“放弃某种习惯”或是“不再做某件事”。另外一个意思相似的短语是 kick the habit，指的就是“革除习惯”，不过这个短语常常和吸菸连用，像是 kick the smoking habit 或是 kick the habit of smoking，都是“戒烟”的意思。

give up 也可以指在比赛中“认输”的意思，与 give in 和 throw in the towel 意思相似。give in 是“让步”的意思，那为什么“丢毛巾”也是“认输”的意思呢？
